"The Spirit Of Wales"

by Morien Wyn Jones

"at my nativity,

The front of heaven was full of fiery shapes,

Of burning cressets, and at my birth

The frame and huge foundation of the earth

Shaked like a coward."

- Owain Glyndwr - "Henry IV", Shakespeare

Unique acrylic on canvas painting
by Morien Wyn Jones.

(24 inch x 20 inch - 61 cms x 51 cms)
1.5 inch (4cms) thick

"The few images we have of  Owain Glyndŵr depict him as learned and kingly,
the consumate politician. But this is not how I imagine the welsh rebel.

I see him as a wild guerrilla leader, haunted by the fact his wife Margaret,
along with two of his daughters, were captured and left to die in the Tower of London.

The painting evolved quite organically.
It started as an abstract, but as the paint started to dry I saw in the swirls a face in a forest.
The face was angry, purposeful and uncompromising. The name Glyndŵr sprang to mind."
